Timberwolves vs. Thunder: Minnesota has all the elements to win it all, but a formidable challenge awaitsNew Foto - Timberwolves vs. Thunder: Minnesota has all the elements to win it all, but a formidable challenge awaits

As the Minnesota Timberwolves prepare to take on the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals — the Timberwolves' second consecutive appearance — we're reminded this season how much their roster has changed, yet the results stay the same. The underlining factor is the play of Anthony Edwards, who, unsurprisingly, has delivered in the postseason. Edwards is averaging 26.5 points, 8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists over the Wolves' 10 playoff games and remains the one guy on the roster with MVP upside. That doesn't mean he doesn't have help. Julius Randle has — finally — broken whatever playoff curse that inhibited him when he was in New York and is currently playing the best basketball of his career. The 6-foot-9 forward is scoring 23.9 points per game in the playoffs, and his playmaking (5.9 assists per) has opened the floor for the Wolves. While he's still a downgrade from Karl-Anthony Towns in terms of raw talent, Randle's skill set fits the current version of the Wolves better, especially given his ability to handle the ball in traffic and in transition. Towns, who is also capable of handling the ball and initiating plays, has historically been slower when attacking from the outside. Randle's determination and ability to read the floor quicker have allowed Minnesota to catch teams off-balance defensively. Randle's grab-and-go proficiency has, in simpler terms, lit a fire under this Wolves offense. And it has seemingly had a ripple effect. Randle's fellow starting forward, Jaden McDaniels, has also seen his game change. The 6-9 forward used to pass up shots, turn down driving lanes and generally played a passive brand of offensive basketball. It was an odd thing, given how he'd routinely assert himself defensively with energy, aggression and determination. There really was no reason why he couldn't approach offense the same way. This season, he finally got the memo. McDaniels averaged 18.5 points and 8.4 rebounds in February and is currently putting up 15.4 points and 6.1 rebounds this postseason. That's a stark improvement for a guy who would often settle for 10-12 points a night and have 25-35 games per season of scoring less than 10 points. His rebounding also has suddenly blossomed, which was seemingly a necessity for a player with his size and athletic ability. While the Wolves are in the Western Conference finals, they have a formidable challenge against the Thunder, even with the added rest. But at the least, the organization has put together a roster that has the chance to beat anyone, which is more than you can ask for from a lot of teams. These Wolves have a lot figured out, including their individual roles. Somewhat similar to the Indiana Pacers, you aren't confused about who they are. Edwards, Randle and McDaniels are the primary offensive drivers in the starting lineup, with big man Naz Reid and guard Donte DiVincenzo coming off the bench to round out the main offensive producers. Rudy Gobert remains the defensive anchor. He's older, he's a bit slower and occasionally you wonder if he'll ever make a shot outside of 6 feet again, but for what he does, there are few better. He takes away shots at the rim, rebounds at a high level and gets stops when needed. Mike Conley remains one of the steadiest locker-room guys in the league, setting the tone, taking young players under his wing and providing playmaking punch. The Wolves have structured themselves in an untraditional sense. They have one foot in the present and one in the future. Usually, that's a recipe for failure, but the players in the future camp are in fact so productive, the team has found a way to make it all work. Eventually, of course, the team will have to pivot off Gobert and Conley due to age. While they'll still need a center, rookie guard Rob Dillingham will get a crack at point guard. Dillingham is a big-time scorer and isn't afraid to launch a ton of 3-pointers, similar to Edwards. There is a world where those two become one of the most dynamic shooting backcourts in the NBA, allowing the Wolves to lean into offense, which might be necessary when Gobert ages out. When is that pivot coming? It's hard to say. If the Wolves win the whole damn thing this year, they'll probably try to run it back for as long as they can. If they don't, it's not like they're in a rush to get things moving, but they could be extra motivated to make adjustments. It also hinges on who'll be back. Reid and Randle both have player options for next season. Randle's contract can be fairly easily extended, but Reid's cannot. If Reid declines the option and enters unrestricted free agency, that'd be the avenue in which the Wolves can re-sign him, which does look like a fairly realistic outcome. So, what to make of the Wolves, both now and moving forward? They consistently outperform expectations. They have a superstar. The supporting cast is growing where others are aging. It does feel, on some level, this year could represent their best chance at shocking the world, especially considering how teams in the West will only get better. And, frankly, it'd be ridiculous to count out that scenario.

Tyrese Haliburton invites Pacers fan pelted with garbage to Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finalsNew Foto - Tyrese Haliburton invites Pacers fan pelted with garbage to Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals

The Indiana Pacers want to take care of a fan who had a bad day in New York. That fan, Hans Perez, wound up going viral after he was pelted with garbage for wearing a Tyrese Haliburton jersey in New York. With the Pacers set to meet the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday, New York fans weren't on board with that decision. Multiple people threw bags of garbage at Perez in a clip which has circulated on social media. Turns out, the Pacers are inviting Perez to Indiana for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. Haliburton told Perez the team would fly him out and put him up for a night so he can attend the game. Perez can bring a guest with him for the experience. He thanked Haliburton for the invite and gave an enthusiastic "Let's go Pacers" chant. The Pacers and Knicks won't get things started until Wednesday. The first two games of the series will take place in New York before the action goes to Indiana. It's the first time since 2000 the Knicks have reached the Eastern Conference finals. The Pacers made it to the conference finals last season, but were defeated by the Boston Celtics. The series sets up a rematch from last year's playoffs. To make it to the 2024 Eastern Conference finals, the Pacers had to go through the Knicks. The series went seven games, with the Pacers coming out on top. Wednesday's Game 1 could set up yet another excellent series, with the winner getting a chance to win its first championship since the 1970s.

Eagles' patience and plan with Nick Sirianni should be a lesson for the rest of the NFLNew Foto - Eagles' patience and plan with Nick Sirianni should be a lesson for the rest of the NFL

The Philadelphia Eagles could have fired Nick Sirianni more than a year ago. Many NFL teams would have given into that pressure. And before we give the Eagles too much credit, it's worth noting thatreports have saidthe Eagles weretalking to Bill Belichickas they weighed Sirianni's future. Sirianni was clearly on the hot seat despite taking the Eagles to the Super Bowl the season before. There were moments of doubt. But as the Eagles on Monday signedSirianni to a multi-year extensionfollowing his Super Bowl title, we should give Philadelphia credit for ultimately landing on the right answer. It wasn't just keeping Sirianni. It was recognizing that changes needed to be made for Sirianni to succeed. It's easy to celebrate Sirianni now, but his job security was a story for a majority of 2024. A little more than a month into the season, when the Eagles were barely above .500 and Sirianni was seen yelling at fans at the end of an ugly win over the Cleveland Browns,he apologizedfor his actions and plenty wondered about his future again. Those questions had been going on for many months, dating back to a bad collapse at the end of the 2023 season. "It's Philly, it's the NFL," Siriannisaid last July. "I mean, at the end of the day, if we don't win enough, it's going to be hard for me to continue to work here, right? And I get that." That's the NFL. Overreaction to losses and the outcry to fire everyone at every failure used to be an SEC thing, but that impatience has come to the NFL too. Coaches rarely get more than a couple years to win anymore. In Sirianni's case he did win a lot, he just had one bad stretch of games. And that was enough to put him on the hot seat. All of the controversy seems like ancient history. Sirianni led the Eagles to 16 wins in their final 17 games, including a dominating win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Now he has a contract extension. The Eagles seemed tempted to make a change. They resisted, and that's a big reason they got another Super Bowl trophy, and a coach they trust for the next few years. Though, knowing Philadelphia and the NFL in general, job security is always just a few losses from changing. When Sirianni was brought back after the 2023 season, he got a demotion. It was announced he wouldn't run the offense anymore; that would be the Eagles' yet-to-be named offensive coordinator. He was thereto set the cultureand oversee all three phases. That was the magic touch. By the end of the season, the players had clearly bought in. During the Eagles' media availability leading up to the Super Bowl, it was impossible to miss the players repeating one of Sirianni's many catchphrases. "You can't be great without the greatness of others" was a popular one. That's a lesson to the rest of the NFL too. Some coaches, particularly Sean Payton and Andy Reid, are very successful calling an offense and also doing everything else that comes along with managing the team as a head coach. But it's difficult and not for everyone. Credit to the Eagles for recognizing that Sirianni had to take a step back to become a better coach. Keeping Sirianni and stripping some of his power weren't the easiest moves. But they worked out in a nearly perfect way. Some NFL teams that are struggling for their own answers should take some lessons.

The Philadelphia Eagles are rewarding Nick Sirianni after he led the club to its first Super Bowl win since 2018. The team agreed to a long-term extension with Sirianni, it announced Monday. The Eagles did not announce specifics regarding Sirianni's extension. In the team's statement, team CEO Jeffrey Lurie praised Sirianni for "his authentic style of leadership" among other things. We've agreed on a multi-year extension with Head Coach Nick Sirianni ‼️pic.twitter.com/K094MmJ0fR — Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles)May 19, 2025 Sirianni, 43, was originally hired as the Eagles' head coach in 2021. Prior to that, he served as the Indianapolis Colts' offensive coordinator. He oversaw the team's transition to Jacoby Brissett after Andrew Luck's surprising retirement ahead of the 2019 NFL season and helped the team reach the playoffs under Philip Rivers the following year. Sirianni proved to be the right hire in Philadelphia. With the team coming off a 4-11-1 season, the Eagles fired Doug Pederson and brought in Sirianni. The Eagles rebounded to 9-8 in his first year as head coach, but lost in the wild-card round of the playoffs. The next year, Sirianni led the Eagles to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. After a disappointing 2023 — in which the Eagles once again made the playoffs, but lost in the wild-card round — Philadelphia got back on track in 2024. The team went 14-3 in the regular season, and reached the Super Bowl for the second time in four seasons under Sirianni. The Eagles managed to get their revenge the second time around, defeating the Chiefs 40-22to win Super Bowl LIX. While the Eagles are expected to be a Super Bowl contender in 2025, the team will have to overcome some change. Last year's offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, left the club in the offseason to be the head coach for the New Orleans Saints. That change may not disrupt the Eagles too much. Sirianni has experience with coordinators leaving. Following the 2022 season, both Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon left for head-coaching jobs elsewhere. The Eagles weathered both departures, and won the Super Bowl just two seasons later. That change could prove significant, but as long as Sirianni has Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkely and A.J. Brown around, the Eagles will probably be just fine moving forward.
