ESPN Sources: Four-time All-Pro LB Fred Warner and the 49ers reached agreement on a three-year, $63 million contract extension that includes over $56 million in guaranteed money that makes him the NFL's highest-paid linebacker. It marks the second time in his seven-year NFL…pic.twitter.com/L4GHK7h4Vy — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter)May 19, 2025 This is the second extension Warner's signed since the 49ers drafted him in the third round, No. 70 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft out of BYU. He's only missed one regular season game in seven years in the league and was a starter immediately. Warner was a first-team All-Pro in 2020, the same year he made his first Pro Bowl. He's made both in each of the last three seasons as one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Warner had two years left on the extension he'd signed prior to the 2021 season. That deal made him the highest-paid linebacker in the league and this new extension does so again. Warner joinstight end George Kittleandquarterback Brock Purdyamong 49ers players who signed multi-year extensions this offseason. Kittle became the highest-paid tight end in the league with his deal. The 2025 season marks Warner's age-29 campaign and his eighth in the NFL. San Francisco's defense could look much different this fall after losing players in free agency and bringing in new talent via the NFL Draft. Longtime coordinator Robert Saleh is back in the building as well. Since Warner entered the league in 2018, only three players have tallied more tackles than him: Bobby Wagner, Roquan Smith and Foyesade Oluokun. Here's how his stats have looked every season: 2018 (16 games):124 tackles, three tackles for loss, six passes defensed, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery 2019 (16 games):118 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles 2020 (16 games):125 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, two interceptions, six passes defensed, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries 2021 (16 games):137 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, four passes defensed, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries 2022 (17 games):130 tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, one interception, 10 passes defensed, one forced fumble 2023 (17 games):132 tackles, six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four interceptions, 11 passes defensed, four forced fumbles 2024 (17 games):131 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, two interceptions, seven passes defensed, four forced fumbles This article originally appeared on USA TODAY:49ers make Fred Warner the NFL's highest-paid LB with new extension

Phillies move forward without suspended closer José AlvaradoNew Foto - Phillies move forward without suspended closer José Alvarado

DENVER (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies entered this season with World Series aspirations, and José Alvarado was one of the reasons for that optimism. Alvarado has been a successful closer this year, but he left a hole in the back of Philadelphia's bullpen when he wassuspended for 80 gamesby Major League Baseball on Sunday after a positive test for external testosterone. The suspension was handed down a day before the Phillies began a seven-game trip Monday night against the Colorado Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said he does not expect his relievers to change their approach. "Just do your thing and try not to do more than who you are, because I truly believe we have enough stuff in our 'pen," Thomson said. "We do. Just don't try to do too much. Throw strikes. Just be yourselves, and we'll get it done." Alvarado is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA and a team-leading seven saves, but Thomson has also used right-hander Jordan Romano in the ninth inning. Romano has five saves, Matt Strahm has two and Taijuan Walker one. Other candidates could emerge as Thomson tinkers with his bullpen. "We've got to find out about some other guys, too," Thomson said. "Joe Ross hasn't pitched in eight days, so he's got to pitch tonight, and that might be a leverage spot. Same thing with (José) Ruiz. We've had (Tanner) Banks in some leverage spots lately, and he's done a fine job." Philadelphia bolstered its bullpen heading into the road trip. The Phillies called up right-hander Max Lazar from Triple-A and optioned Mick Abel, who won his big league debut Sunday with nine strikeouts against Pittsburgh — a club record for a pitcher in his first major league game. Lazar is an option against righties or lefties, Thomson said. "He's actually pitching really well, and his velocity is really good," Thomson said. "He's throwing a lot of strikes, breaking ball's been really good, and he's kind of a neutral split. So if we need to, he can get lefties out." Barring rainouts, Alvarado would be eligible to return on Aug. 19 against Seattle. He would lose $4.5 million, exactly half his $9 million salary this year, as part of a$22 million, three-year contract. Because of the suspension, he is ineligible for the postseason. Thomson said he won't hesitate to use Alvarado in the ninth inning during the last six weeks of the regular season despite not having him available in October if the Phillies make the playoffs. "If he's pitching well, yeah," Thomson said of using Alvarado as a closer. "We've got to get there." ___ AP MLB:https://apnews.com/hub/mlb

Report: 49ers' Fred Warner becomes highest-paid LBNew Foto - Report: 49ers' Fred Warner becomes highest-paid LB

Four-time All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner has agreed to a three-year, $63 million contract extension to remain with the San Francisco 49ers through 2029, ESPN reported on Monday. The deal would include $56 million in guaranteed money for Warner, a four-time Pro Bowler who has played for the 49ers since he was drafted out of BYU in the third round in 2018. As a result, Warner is in line to become the NFL's highest-paid linebacker -- the second such time he achieved the feat. He signed a five-year, $95 million extension in 2021 that first put him atop the list. Now, he tops Baltimore's Roquan Smith, who landed a five-year, $100 million deal in 2023. Warner has appeared in 115 games for the 49ers, totaling 897 tackles, 10 sacks and 10 interceptions. His 15 forced fumbles rank second in franchise history, just one behind Hall of Famer Patrick Willis. Last year, Warner led the 49ers with 131 tackles, marking the seventh straight year he posted the team's season-high mark. Warner's reported re-signing is just the latest in a string of key moves by San Francisco, which recently agreed to extensions with quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle. San Francisco has advanced to at least the NFC Championship Game four times in the past six seasons, including two trips to the Super Bowl. The 49ers, though, are coming off their first missed postseason since 2020 after going 6-11. --Field Level Media
